田勁

my first childhood idol – back in the old days where singers’ albums are in the form of cassette tapes and where their posters are distributed in the centre-fold page of weekly A5 sized entertainment magazines.

田勁

it has been like 20 years, so my memories of how i got to know of christopher ng (yeah that’s his english name. his chinese name is 黄冠翔, this i remember) is pretty fuzzy now. can’t recall what was the first song that i heard which mesmerized me but some of his ‘classics’ include 就是要愛你, 讓我瀟灑的醉, 碎花如雨隨風飛 and 我真的用心愛著你.

ok ok, i think by now you must be going “huh”…?

well, you can’t blame me. i am getting by in years, and those who know me well should know that i kinda ‘matured’ earlier than most kids. so while most kids my age were studying or listening to children songs, i was already ‘performing’ in karaoke lounges singing chinese oldies and hokkien songs. similarly, i started idolizing cutesy guys in my primary school days, probably earlier than most.

so, yeah, you don’t know who is christopher ng. let me tell you then. he is singaporean, he stays near my house and his dad sells coffee powder in the market below my house. hahaha… useless information right?

some pictures of 田勁:

i remember i used to own all his cassette tapes until my dad threw them all out one day without asking me. i collect his posters and those little ‘yes’ cards which costs 20 cents each. and because he often wears many plain silver rings, me and my classmate will go to sinma or chamelon to buy those cheap rings as well. i’m an only child and my parents weren’t exactly the kind who would plan family outings, so i had lots of time and i would buy those chinese foolscap paper (with squares, i forgot what they are called) and copy the lyrics of his songs out. yeah i know, i have a pathetic childhood… hahaha…

oh i almost forgot, the main point of this entry is to say that i saw his cd selling at popular! i was like a small kid, exclaiming while i run over to pick up the album. so embarassing because mik and alice was with me. it’s a 2CD compilation of his old songs, distributed by eq music. 27 songs in total. i didn’t hesitate in buying it. and when mik sent us home, we played the songs in her car. and all of us were laughing away. in this era, it is hard to convince anyone why i liked christopher after hearing his songs. don’t get me wrong, it’s not like he can’t sing or the songs are not nice, it’s just that they are so…. dated, out-dated. hahaha.

oh… memories…
anyone interested to listen to the songs (and perhaps have a good laugh?) let me know. i’m more than happy to introduce great stuff to all…
